SRI hold its Annual research review 2002
Annual research
review of SRI was held at SRI, Uda Walawe on 19th and 20th
December 2003, in order to review the progress made during 2002 in all
research activities of the SRI.
Mr. Sumanasiri Hulugalle, Secretary Ministry of co-operatives was participated
as chief guest in this occasion.
Dr. Balasundaram, the
director, Sugarcane Breeding institute, Coimbatore was present as a
guest scientist and
delivered a speech on the experiences in sugarcane breeding in his 30years
services as a scientist at Sugarcane Breeding institute, Coimbatore
The Director of
SRI briefed the SRI research programme and the programme objectives. This was
followed by research sessions of each discipline where the research officers
of SRI made presentation on their disciplines.
About 20 senior Agricultural and Management staff of Pelwatte and Sevanagala
sugar mills attended the meeting.
SRI Brought the Purview of under Ministry
of Plantation Industries
The new government has taken the SRI back under the purview of the Ministry
of Plantation Industries. This is a welcome step that will help SRI to work
closely with research institutes; CRI, TRI AND RRI as those also under the
same Ministry.
SRI welcomes New Chairman and the board
Prof. C.S.Weerarathne was appointed as the new chairman of the SRI for the
period of 2004 – 2007. Prof. Weeraratne was a member of Board of Governers

Development
Training on Vector Transmission of Phytoplasma Diseases of Sugarcane
Mr. JAUT Seneviratne, Senior Research Officer in Pest Management, who is
reading for Ph.D at Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA), Peradeniya,
has successfully completed a 9 month training on the advance techniques in
molecular biotechnology that are used in the investigation of vector
transmission of phytoplasma diseases in the Agricultural University,
Guangzhou, and Peoples Republic of China through an assistance program of
the UNICEF.
Mr. D.P.W.Pottewela,
Extension and Training Officer of Economics and Extension Division is on
study leave to pursue studies leading to M.Phil degree at PGIA, Peradeniya.
Mr. C, de Silva Research
Officer in Agronomy Division is on study leave at PGIA leading to M.Phil
degree in Agriculture.
Mrs. B. D.S.K.Ariyawansa
Research Officer (Plant Breeding) underwent five-day training on Genetics
and Plant breeding at the Division of Genetics, Indian Agricultural Research
Institute, New Delhi, India from 15th to 20th March
2004.
Dr. H.K.Sunil, Principle Research
Officer, (Plant Breeding) successfully completed training programme on
Agricultural Research Management at National Academy of Agricultural
Research Management (NAARM) at Undra Pradesh , India from 13th
January to 22nd February. This program was funded by the CARP
Sri Lanka.
Mr. M.S. Perera (Senior
Research Officer, Extension) and Mr. C. de Silva (Research Officer,
Agronomy) attended a two-day workshop on scientific writing organised by
the CARP at In-service training center Gannoruwa, Peradeniya,
Mr. C, de Silva Research
Officer in Agronomy Division successfully completed training on 2004 China
International Training Course on Sugarcane Cultivation Techniques at Jinan
University, Guangzhou City of Peoples’ Republic of China from 1st
July to 30th August 2004. This programme was sponsored by China
Light Industrial Corporation for foreign Economic and Technical Corporation.
